what is notan ...? The beauty of intermining light and dark ...! How to use it in art?


       First of all am not going to tell you in detail because it covers a very huge topic. 
     What is notan ? 
Notan is the Harmonic arrangements of dark and light, which can create very good impression on the subject. 

Basically Notan is Japanese word that means
"Light- dark balance". A Notan uses an extremely limited range of values It can be 2 valued Notan ( black as dark and white as light ) or can be 3 valued Notan ( black, white ,and grey ), or can be 4 valued include ( black ,white ,and two shades of grey).

Many master's like Degas,Turner,  whistler, Vermeer etc... created their art pieces based on this concept of composition.

For example we can take Whistlers   The little white girl 
    As you can see a big white dress against black background we can say it as a 2 value Notan. 

Most of you seen this image of yin and Yang
You know this drawing comes from the idea of Notan. 
       The yin and yang symbol illustrates the idea of notan



Which indicates Balance. Opposition. Motion, and interest.
